Join us on November 20th as we hear from Mateus de Campos on Reframing Discipleship: A Gospel-Centered Approach to Discipleship. “Discipleship is a concept with which most Christians are familiar. We readily acknowledge the need for discipleship, both personally and within the life of the church. Yet our familiarity with the term often carries modern assumptions that do not always align with a biblical understanding of discipleship. Today, discipleship is frequently viewed as an initial stage in the Christian life, a method for teaching foundational doctrines, a strategy for fostering spiritual maturity, or even a tool for evangelism and church growth. When we turn to the Christian Gospels, however, we find that discipleship is rooted in a historical reality with its own theological matrix. Discipleship is shaped by a gospel narrative that describes both a relationship and an identity. In these talks, we will explore the meaning of discipleship as it emerges from Jesus’ historical relationship with his disciples, seeking to discern the key characteristics that define the contours of every Christian’s relationship with Christ." Mateus F. de Campos (PhD, University of Cambridge) is the George F. Bennett Associate Professor of New Testament at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. A native of Brazil, he served for nearly a decade as a pastor in the Church of the Nazarene in Americana, São Paulo, and has ministered in South America, North America, and Europe. Mateus and his wife Renata live in Middleton, MA, with their children, Matt and Zoe.
